Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources
(MFOR) is the line ministry in charge of fisheries and aquatic
resources sector in Sri Lanka. The MFOR is responsible for the sustainable
utilization of fisheries and Aquatic
resources for the development of the national economy and as such
lays down the sector policy, coordinates facilities, monitors and
supervises the functioning of the agencies and institutions within
the sector. The ministry comprises of six divisions: |

| Functions of the MFOR includes: |
- Implementation of policies, plans and programs in respect of
the development of fisheries and aquatic
resources
- Implementation of relevant laws pertaining to the development,
management and conservation of marine, coastal and inland resources
within its purview
- Monitoring, controlling and surveillance of the Exclusive Economic
Zone (EEZ)
- Provision of development assistance for fishing and welfare
facilities to fishermen
- Promotion of credit facilities to the fisheries sector
- Determination and resolution of fishing rights
- Provision of training and extension services to fishermen and
fish farmers
- Conducting research in the field of fisheries and aquatic
resources
- Rescue operations and administration of coast guard services
