Awareness Program of collectors of suppliers of Shrimp Brooders

Suppliers and collectors of brooders could make a considerable contribution to prevent disease transmission during collection, transportation and handling of wild brood-stock in aquaculture.

To assist the suppliers of shrimp brooders, NAQDA has taken steps to regularize the actions of suppliers and collectors of shrimp brooders with the objective of preventing of the spread of White Spot disease. It was reported that wild population of Tiger shrimps in the Indian Ocean are also infected with the disease.

As a first step, an awareness program for suppliers and collectors on Best Management Practices (BMP) for collection, transportation and handling of brooders was held at NAQDA conference room on 10 th October 2005.

Dr. Kamal Balasooriya(Fish Pathologist) and Prof. J.M.P.K.Jayasinghe, from University of Wayamba participated as resource persons in this event. Mr. Hasitha Thamanagama, Chairman, Shrimp Breeders Association and Shrimp Farm Extension Monitoring Officers of NAQDA were also present.
