Restructuring of the Shrimp Farming Industry(26/08/2005)

An awareness programme regarding activities undertaken for Restructuring of the Shrimp Farming Industry by the National Aquaculture Development Authority of Sri Lanka (NAQDA) for all Members of Parliament and key government officials of the Puttalam District was held in Chilaw Rest House on 26 th August 2005.

Expert of shrimp farming industry visits Sri Lanka (8-12 July 2005)

NAQDA has taken steps to initiate a domestication programme for development of specific pathogen free Peneaus monodon in Sri Lanka . In this regard, NAQDA invited Dr. Andrew Kuljis, an expert from Hawaii, to study the shrimp farming industry situation in Sri Lanka, in order to prepare a project proposal to be submitted to the Government of Sri Lanka.

During his stay from 8th to 12th July 2005 he is due to visit the shrimp farming industry area in the NWP and especially, the NWPC Fisheries Ministry Project for construction of a facility for domestication of brood stock of shrimp in Chilaw. He will also conduct a seminar on the subject on the 12th of July from 10.00 am to 11.30 am. at the Chilaw Rest House. All stakeholders who are interested in attending this seminar are welcome.

Dr. Kuljis is funded by Asian Productivity Organization, Japan (APO)

 

Min Visithuru Sri Lanka 2005 Exhibition (02-05 June 2005)

Min Visithuru Sri Lanka 2005 , the International Exhibition of Ornamental Fish, Aquatic Plants and Accessories, is the first-ever of its kind, held in Sri Lanka with the participation of international visitors who are actual importers of ornamental fish and aquatic plants in Sri Lanka. The event was held in the Sri Lanka Exhibition and Convention Center (SLECC) from 02-05 June.

NAQDA Welcomes New Graduate Recruits (15 July 2005)

NAQDA recruited 43 new officers under the Graduate Recruitment Scheme of the Government for newly approved cadre positions. Accordingly, 14 Shrimp Farm Extension and Monitoring Officers, 09 District Aquaculture Extension Officers, 08 Aquaculturists, 07 Statistical Officers, 01 Social Development, 01 Enterprise Development Officer, 01 Civil Engineer, 01 Procurement Officer and 01 Analyst/Programmer were recruited to be effective from the 18 th July. Appointment letters were awarded to these officers on 15 th July in a ceremony held at the Nagarodaya Center at the Baseline Road. These officers have been placed mainly in outstation offices to strengthen the field staff of the Authority. Many of them are recently passed out graduates from local universities and represent a diverse and multi-disciplined background. NAQDA warmly welcomes the new recruits and wish them all success in their new careers.

Rambadagalle Ornamental Fish and Aquatic Plants Production and Training Center (27 th May, 2005)

NAQDA has taken steps to establish an Ornamental Fish and Aquatic Plants Production and Training Center at Rambadagalle in the Kurunegala District. It was declared open by Hon. Chandrasena Wijesinghe, the Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources on 27 th May, 2005. It will soon start to function as the hub of all ornamental fish and aquatic plants development activities undertaken by NAQDA.

Min Visithuru 2005 Press Conference(27/04/2005)

A press conference was held on 27th April 2005 at the Ministry of Fisheries & aquatic Resources regarding the Min Visithuru Sri Lanka 2005. In this press conference, Hon. Chandresena Wijesinghe the Minister of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources, Mr Rohatha Athukorala Chairman, EDB and Mr Nimal Chandraratne Director, Coastal Aquaculture & Sea Farming Development /NAQDA explained the importance of the coming event to the media. Fresh water fish Cusine Dermonstration at the National Food Exihbition & Trade Fair 2005 (8 to 10 April 2005)

Opening of Angunawewa Aquaculture Extension Center (29/03/2005)

Hon. Chandrasena Wijesinghe, Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources declared opened the newly built Regional Aquaculture Extension Office for Hambantota district on 29 th March 2005. The office is located in Kattakaduwa, Ranna near the Angunawewa Tank. It is expected that this improved facility will help to revive the aquaculture development programs carried out in Hambantota district.

Vietnam Minister of Fisheries Visits Dambulla Aquaculture Center (20/03/2005)

Vietnam Minister of Fisheries Dr. Ta Quang Ngoc made an official visit to Sri Lanka on the invitation of Hon. Chandrasena Wijesinghe, Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources with 6 other delegates from 17 th –20 th March. Among other places, he visited the Dambulla Aquaculture Development Center belonged to NAQDA on 18 th March. This visit is expected to dawn a new era of collaboration in fisheries sector activities between two countries. Vietnam has already provided assistance to NAQDA by training its officers and by providing technical expertise to Artaemia production under ARDQI project.
