AQUACULTURE DEVELOPMENT CENTER - UDA WALaWA
AQUACULTURE DEVELOPMENT CENTER - UDA WALaWA

Established with Chinese government aid in 1975, Uda Walawe centre has been the flagship freshwater breeding station in Sri Lanka ever since. Facilities at the centre have continuously been upgraded by number of other donor-funded projects after its establishment. It is situated around 170 km away from Colombo near the Uda Walawe reservoir. This centre consists of two units known ‘Old Centre’ and ‘New Centre’ and covers an area of 49.6 ha.

The new centre was designed for breeding and rearing of Chinese carp, Indian carp, Common carp and Tilapia. The old centre has facilities for seed rearing of Carp and Tilapia only. A hatchery facility is available in the new centre with a production capacity of about 40 million post larvae per year. Details of fish rearing facilities available in the new and old centres are given in tables 01 and 02 respectively.
