| Potential for aquaculture enterprises in Sri
Lanka |
Sri Lanka’s economy is fast being
integrated into the global economy. The only way to survive under
competitive economic forces created by globalization process, is
to develop a strong enterprise base, which can compete not only
in the global market but in the growing local market too. This situation
is true for all the sectors of the economy and aquaculture is not
an exception. Hence, developing a viable base of aquaculture enterprises
in Sri Lanka is an essential and urgent task. The backbone of the
industry should be a well-organized and closely interrelated network
of aquaculture enterprises, which can carry out diverse functions
and operate in a range of scales beginning from rural micro enterprises
to large-scale conglomerates. Without such an enterprise base the
industry cannot be expected to survive under harsh realities of
the global economy.

Aquaculture provide wide variety of opportunities
for different enterprise activities that can be organized as separate
units of investment due to:
-
Ability to organize the production units
under different management regimes that can match with resources
availability of investors in a flexible manner (e.g. extensive,
semi intensive, intensive)
-
Existence of a variety of production related
operations that can be organized as separate enterprise units
(e.g. breeding and hatchery operations, fish seed rearing, table
fish production etc.)
- Ability to organize aquaculture production activities over
a range of operational scales that can match with varying capacities
(e.g. small scale, medium scale, large scale)
- Involvement of a variety of support services that can be organized
as separate enterprises (e.g. technical services, transport services,
construction activities, import-export activities, financial services)
