Majority of Sri Lankan guppy breeders use formulated feed containing 40% to 60% dietary protein for both female and male guppy brood stock. In the present study three feeds were formulated containing 40%( Feed A), 45% (Feed B) and Feed C (50%) crude protein and the effect of each feed on the growth and reproductive performances of guppy, Poecilia reticulata was investigated from February to August, 2001 starting from 15 days old fry.

There were no significant differences in specific growth rate, body weight gain, gonadosomatic indices (of males of females) fecundity and in the number of fry produced per female per day between guppies fed with feed A, B, and C. Male guppies fed with feed containing 45% and 50% protein developed significantly heavier testes (P<0.05) while females fed with 45% dietary protein produced significantly larger eggs compared to eggs produced by females fed with feed A and C (1.44mm ± 0.008, 1.54mm ± 0.01, 1.48mm ± 0.01 for feed A, B and C respectively; P<0.05)

If larger eggs produced by the females are of better quality with different composition and if males with heavier testes could produce a greater number of viable sperms, a feed containing 45% protein could be recommended for both male and female brood stock of guppy which would be cost effective and convenient at farm level
