National Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture Training Institute (NIFATI)

National Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture Training Institute (NIFATI) is the premier government sector training institute in Sri Lanka, for inland fisheries and aquaculture. It is situated in Kalawewa in the district of Anuradhapura, which is the ancient capital of Sri Lanka. Training Institute is located on a picturesque site in the Vijithapura village, adjacent to the Kalawewa reservoir (built in 400 AD), which together with its water distribution canals is considered as an engineering marvel of ancient Sri Lanka.

NIFATI was established in 2009 under the Aquatic Resource Development and Quality Improvement Project (ADB funded) of the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development.

In order carry out training functions, we have a highly qualified, experienced and trained team of experts specialized in different fields of inland fisheries and aquaculture.

Auditorium

Main auditorium of NIFATI can accommodate 200 participants. This is fully air conditioned and equipped with the state of the art electronic equipments. The auditorium contains all facilities for conferences/ seminars/workshops.

Lecture hall

Two fully air conditioned lecture halls with a seating capacity of 75 each is available and equipped with the state of the art electronic equipments.

Library

NIFATI library has a collection of modern and authoritative publications, specially in the fields of inland fisheries and aquaculture. In addition, the periodicals both local and international are available for the use of participants of the training programme.

Residential facilities for trainees

Training participants of NIFATI could enjoy the opportunity of living away from their workstation and adopt themselves to the learning environment of the institute. The residential facilities are located in the same premises where the institute is located.

Resource Persons quarters is comprised of three fully air conditioned rooms.

16 double rooms (32 beds) with attached bathrooms and 6 double rooms (12 beds) without attached bathrooms are available to accommodate participants of training programmes. Further 11 participants can be accommodated in the dormitory

Facilities at NIFATI can be made available for other Government Institutions, Projects, NGO's for conduction of training programmes / seminars/ workshops.
